Your Google Business Profile controls whether you show up on Google Maps, in the local 3-pack, and in Google's AI answers. In the UAE, where most people search on their phones and call straight from the listing, a weak profile means lost enquiries. A verified, complete, regularly updated one brings them in.

Why Does a Google Business Profile Matter in the UAE?

It's usually the first thing a customer sees about you, even before your website. Someone in JLT searching "AC repair near me" gets a map with three businesses on it. They check ratings, glance at photos, and tap call. Most never scroll past those three.

The profile itself is free. It holds your name, address, hours, phone number, photos and reviews, and Google shows it on both Search and Maps. What makes it so important here is buyer behaviour: people in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi compare quickly and decide on mobile. If your listing is missing details or looks abandoned, they move on in seconds.

Who Should Have One?

If customers visit you, or you go to them, you need a profile. That covers restaurants, salons, gyms, clinics and shops. It also covers cleaning companies, movers, plumbers and pest control teams who work at the customer's address, plus law firms, accounting offices and real estate brokers with an office people can walk into.

Online-only businesses are the exception. Google wants in-person contact with customers during your listed hours, so an e-commerce store with no pickup point usually won't qualify.

How Does Google Decide Which Profiles Rank?

Google looks at three things: relevance, distance and prominence.

Relevance

Does your profile match what the person typed? Google checks your name, category, services and description. The primary category counts most. A dentist should pick "Dental Clinic," not something broad like "Medical Center."

Distance

How close are you to the searcher, or to the area they mentioned? You can't move your office, but service area businesses can list the exact communities they cover. Be honest here. Adding areas you don't actually serve rarely helps.

Prominence

How well known and trusted are you? Reviews play a big part, along with how you reply to them, mentions on other sites and the strength of your website. Solid local SEO supports this side of things.

How Does Your Profile Affect AI Search?

Google's AI tools lean on your profile for local answers. Gemini, AI Overviews and the newer Ask Maps feature all pull from it. So a thin listing doesn't just rank lower. It also gives the AI very little to say about you.

A lot of UAE businesses haven't adjusted to this yet.

Q&A Is Gone, Ask Maps Is In

Google retired the Q&A API in November 2025 and started removing the public Q&A section from listings. Ask Maps takes its place. Users type a question about a business and get an AI answer on the spot. It launched in the US in March 2026, and Google has been widening its AI features to other markets since.

You can't write those answers anymore. Ask Maps builds them from your profile, your reviews, your photos and your website. What you control is how accurate and detailed that source material is.

Review Text Matters More Than Star Count

Say someone asks for a Dubai Marina clinic with Arabic-speaking doctors that opens on Saturdays. Gemini checks your hours and attributes, then looks through review text for mentions of those things. A review saying "Dr. Sara explained everything in Arabic, and I got a Saturday slot" does a lot more work than fifty reviews that just say "great service."

Why Isn't My Business Showing on Google Maps?

It's usually one of a few fixable issues. These are the ones we run into most often with UAE clients:

Issue

Result

Fix

Not verified

Can't rank properly

Finish verification (often a short video)

Name differs from trade licence or signage

Failed verification or suspension

Use your real business name, no extra keywords

Broad or wrong category

Shows for the wrong searches

Pick the most specific category you can

English only

Arabic searchers don't find you

Add Arabic to your description, posts and site

Vague address or pin

Customers can't locate you

Add building name, floor and a nearby landmark

Different details on other sites

Google trusts your data less

Match name, address and phone everywhere

No recent activity

Visibility slips

Post, add photos and reply to reviews weekly

The address one deserves a special mention. Many Dubai locations are known by building name rather than street number, so a clear exterior photo showing your signage and a correctly placed pin make a real difference.

How Do You Optimize a Google Business Profile?

Fill in every section, keep it active, and make sure the facts are right. Here's the order we'd work in:

  1. Claim and verify. Sign in at business.google.com and find your listing. Create one if it isn't there.

  2. Choose categories. One specific primary category. Add secondary ones only for services you really offer.

  3. Write the description. Say what you do, who it's for and which areas you cover. Plain language beats stuffed keywords.

  4. Add services and attributes. Languages spoken, parking, accessibility, payment options. AI tools use these to match detailed questions.

  5. Upload real photos. Your storefront, interior, team and finished work. No stock images. Try for a couple of new ones each month.

  6. Post updates. Offers, new services, Ramadan timings, public holiday hours. Each post tells Google something current about you.

  7. Ask for reviews. Ask happy customers to mention what they came in for. Don't buy reviews or reward people for leaving them. Google removes fake ones and can restrict your listing.

  8. Reply to reviews. All of them, including the bad ones. Stay calm and polite.

  9. Link a good website. It should load fast on mobile and match your profile details. An FAQ section and LocalBusiness schema help AI confirm your information. Our guide on how to optimize content for AI answers covers the setup.

  10. Stay consistent. Same name, address and number on YellowPages.ae, 2GIS and any industry directories.

  11. Check for edits. Anyone can suggest changes to your listing, so look at it every week. One wrong phone number can cost you a month of calls.

How Can You Tell If It's Working?

Watch the Performance tab. Calls, direction requests, messages and website clicks should climb over time.

When views go up but calls don't, people are seeing you and choosing someone else. Better photos, more detailed reviews or a clearer offer usually fix that. When website clicks rise but enquiries stay flat, the problem is on your site, not the profile. Our post on conversion rate optimization in Dubai goes through what to change.

When Should You Bring in an Expert?

Get help if your profile is complete and verified but still stuck outside the map pack, if you manage multiple branches, or if your listing has been suspended. Those problems usually go deeper than the profile itself.

Eyes On Solution audits profiles, sorts out category and data problems, sets up a review process and connects your listing to a website Google's AI can trust. If leads are the goal, read how to generate leads in Dubai or look at our GEO services.

FAQs

Why is Google Business Profile important for small businesses in Dubai?

It gets you onto Google Maps and local results at no cost. Google ranks local listings on relevance, distance and reputation, not ad spend, so a small shop can outrank a big brand in its own area.

Is Google Business Profile free in the UAE?

Yes. Setting it up and managing it is free. You'd only pay for Google Ads or for an agency to run it for you.

How long does a new Google Business Profile take to rank?

Searches for your business name can show it within days. Competitive terms like "dentist in Dubai" take longer, often a few weeks to a few months, depending on reviews, competition and how active you are.

Does Google Business Profile help with AI search?

Yes. Gemini and Ask Maps use your profile details, reviews, photos and website to answer local questions. The more complete your profile, the more they have to go on.

Can I create a profile without an office in the UAE?

You can if you serve customers at their location. Set it up as a service area business, hide your address and list the areas you cover.

Should I add Arabic to my Google Business Profile?

Yes. Plenty of UAE residents search in Arabic. Add Arabic to your description, posts and website, but keep your business name the same as your trade licence and signage.

What happened to Q&A on Google Business Profile?

Google began removing it in late 2025. Ask Maps, which uses Gemini, now answers customer questions based on your profile, reviews and website.

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?

Weekly is a good habit. Add photos, post updates, reply to reviews and fix anything that has changed.
