Stop treating clicks as your only scoreboard. Measure AI search visibility through four sources instead: the Generative AI report in Google Search Console, the AI Assistant channel in GA4, a fixed prompt set you test monthly in English and Arabic, and your server logs. Together these tell you whether AI engines are showing your brand, even when fewer people land on your site.
What Is AI Search Visibility?
AI search visibility is how often AI systems name, cite or recommend your business inside a generated answer. It covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
A Google ranking puts a link in front of someone. AI visibility puts your brand inside the answer. A customer can read your pricing, your location and your service list without opening your website, so your traffic report shows a loss while your influence holds steady.
Three things get measured:
Presence. Does your brand appear in the answer at all?
Citation. Does the answer link to your pages as a source?
Framing. How does the AI describe you, and does it place you above or below competitors?
Who Should Measure AI Search Visibility in the UAE?
Any UAE business whose customers research before buying: real estate, legal, clinics, fit-out and contracting, B2B services, recruitment, logistics and education.
The urgency here is local. Microsoft's Global AI Diffusion report for Q2 2026 placed the UAE first in the world for AI use, ahead of every other economy it measured. Your buyers already ask an assistant before they ask Google. If you sell in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, AI answers are now part of your funnel whether you measure them or not.
Why Your Clicks Fall While Your Rankings Hold
Your clicks drop because the answer sits above your link and satisfies the question. The user never scrolls. That creates a reporting trap:
Rankings look stable in your rank tracker
Impressions in Search Console stay flat or rise
Clicks and sessions fall month over month
Enquiry quality often improves, because whoever still clicks is already half sold
Rule out the ordinary causes first. A core update, an indexing fault or a seasonal dip produces the same chart. Our guide on diagnosing Google core update traffic drops covers that check. If the drop survives it, you have an AI search problem, not a content quality problem.
How to Measure AI Search Visibility: A Five-Step Method
Work through them in order. The first two take under an hour. The rest become a monthly routine.
Step 1: Open the Generative AI Report in Search Console
Go to Performance, then Generative AI. Google launched this report on 3 June 2026 and finished the worldwide rollout on 31 August 2026, so every site now has it.
It shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device. Filter the country to United Arab Emirates and note which pages surface.
Know its limits. There is no click or click-through-rate data, and nothing comes through the Search Console API, so the figures live only in the interface. Export them by hand each month and keep your own record.
Step 2: Separate AI Assistant Traffic in GA4
Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic Acquisition, and set the dimension to Session default channel group. Google added a native AI Assistant channel on 13 May 2026, which sorts recognised AI referrers automatically with no setup from you.
Two warnings. It is not retroactive, so earlier AI traffic stays under Referral or Direct. It also undercounts, because most AI visits arrive with no referrer and land in Direct. Treat the number as a floor, never a total.
To rebuild history, add a custom channel group matching chatgpt.com|perplexity.ai|claude.ai|gemini.google.com|copilot.microsoft.com and place it above Referral. Custom groups do apply to past data.
Step 3: Run a Fixed Prompt Set in English and Arabic
Most UAE businesses skip this step, and it is the only one that measures brand presence directly.
Build a list of 20 to 30 buying questions your customers actually ask. Use their phrasing, not your brand name:
best interior fit out company in Dubai
corporate lawyer near DIFC
how much does a villa renovation cost in Abu Dhabi
The same questions written in Arabic
Run them across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode on a set date each month. For each prompt, log whether your brand appeared, which competitors appeared, and which sources the answer cited. Your score is the percentage of prompts where you were named.
Test both languages. A brand that is strong in English can be invisible in Arabic. If your site serves both, confirm your hreflang setup for Arabic and English pages is correct before you blame the content.
Step 4: Check Your Server Logs for AI Crawlers
Ask your developer for a log report filtered to GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and OAI-SearchBot.
If these crawlers never reach your pages, no amount of content work will get you cited. Check robots.txt and your firewall rules first. Plenty of UAE sites block AI crawlers by accident through a security plugin or a CDN setting, then wonder why they never appear.
Step 5: Tie It Back to a Business Number
Visibility only counts if it moves revenue. Connect your AI data to outcomes you already track:
Branded search volume. Branded queries in Search Console tend to rise after AI mentions rise, because people hear your name and then search for it.
Direct traffic to service pages. Someone who reads your name in ChatGPT and types your URL later lands as Direct.
"How did you hear about us?" Add an open field to your enquiry form. It is low-tech and it works.
Lead quality. Track close rate, not lead count. AI-referred enquiries usually arrive further along.

How to Improve Your Brand's AI Visibility Once You Have a Baseline
Fix what the data points to, in this order.
Make your facts extractable. AI systems reuse specific, checkable statements. Publish real prices, service areas, timelines, licence details and team credentials. Vague "leading provider" copy gives a model nothing to quote.
Keep your details identical everywhere. Your name, address, phone number, licence authority and service categories must match across your website, Google Business Profile, UAE directories and social profiles. When facts conflict, AI systems leave you out rather than risk an error. Our local SEO guide for Dubai businesses covers that work.
Structure pages around questions. Use the question as the heading and answer it in the first two sentences. This is the highest-return change for AI citation, covered in our guide to optimising content for AI search engines.
Earn mentions on sources AI already trusts. Industry publications, UAE business media and credible directories feed the models. Your website is one vote. Third-party coverage is many.
Add schema markup. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ schema help engines parse who you are and what you sell. That sits at the core of our generative engine optimization services in Dubai.
Four Measurement Mistakes to Avoid
Treating one prompt result as proof. AI answers vary by session, account and location. Test each prompt several times before concluding anything.
Using referral traffic as your visibility score. Most AI influence produces no click. Referral data is one input, not the headline.
Dropping SEO to chase GEO. Google's generative features draw on the same core ranking systems as normal search, so weak foundations sink both. Technical and on-page SEO still comes first.
Measuring in English only. In the UAE that hides half your market.
Start With One Month of Data
Set your baseline this week. Pull the Generative AI report, check your AI Assistant channel, write your 20 prompts and run them once. Repeat on the same date next month.
One pass will not fix your AI visibility. It will tell you whether a falling click count means you are losing ground or simply being read somewhere else.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my brand appears in ChatGPT answers?
Ask ChatGPT the questions your buyers ask, worded without your brand name, and check whether you are named or cited. Run each prompt several times across different sessions, because answers vary. Record the results in a sheet so you can compare month to month.
Why did my website traffic drop but my rankings stay the same?
AI Overviews and AI Mode answer the question above your link, so users stop clicking. Confirm the pattern in Search Console by comparing impressions against clicks. If impressions hold steady while clicks fall, you are losing clicks to AI answers rather than losing rankings.
Can Google Search Console show AI search data?
Yes. The Generative AI performance report under Performance shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, available to all sites worldwide since 31 August 2026. It does not include click or click-through-rate data, and the figures are not accessible through the Search Console API.
Does GA4 track ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic?
Partly. GA4's AI Assistant channel captures sessions that arrive with a recognised AI referrer. It misses mobile app visits and copy-paste visits, which arrive as Direct, so the real figure is higher than the channel shows.
Is AI search visibility different from SEO?
They overlap but measure different things. SEO measures whether your page ranks and earns clicks. AI visibility measures whether your brand is named inside the answer. Strong technical SEO supports both, since Google's AI features use the same underlying ranking systems.
How often should UAE businesses measure AI visibility?
Monthly for prompt testing, weekly for GA4 and Search Console if your traffic is volatile. Monthly gives you a trend without reacting to normal variation in AI responses.
Do I need a paid AI visibility tool?
Not to begin. A spreadsheet, a fixed prompt list and one hour a month will give you a usable baseline. Paid platforms save time once you are tracking dozens of prompts across several languages and competitors.
Why does my competitor appear in AI answers and I do not?
Usually because their business facts are consistent across trusted sources, their content answers questions directly, and third-party publications mention them. AI systems favour brands they can verify from more than one place.
